1960s & 1970s Gay Classics
Slung hips and mutton-chop sideburns! Who ever would have guessed that our childhood would become collectible? Yet, the late 1960s and the '70s were also the "childhood" of the modern gay rights movement and the gay pornography industry. With the lifting of the ban on sending male frontal nudes through the US mail, sexually explicit homoerotic images and tough, hairy models replaced the pristine physique photography of the passing beefcake era. The following images were among a single collection of photographs from Target, Colt and Male Image Studios. The previous owner acquired the collection some 25 years ago, making these images rare early prints from these studios. Unless marked otherwise, each image is unstamped. Be sure to read the "Collector's Notes" for Colt Studio below. If you would like to learn more about the history of gay photography and its most popular artists, as well as review and purchase the most popular books in in print on the subject, please check out our links page.

Collectors Notes:
In the early years of Colt Studio, photo packs were mailed out in onion-skin wrappers. One photograph in the set would bare the Colt Studio stamp on the reverse, while the other six or seven photos would be unstamped. Below are two of Colt Studio's early stamps. Note that Rip Colt started out in New York City before he became the Southern California institution that he is today.
