Vintage Female Nudes
"Now I ask you very confidentially, 'Ain't she sweet?'" What can we say about nude females in art that has not already been said? From Plato to Gloria Steinem, the nude female has been philosophized and debated back into her panties and out again. Is she an object? Is she coy? Is she goddess or prostitute? Maybe yes to all. But what is striking about early female nudes is often what we project upon them ourselves. We might see an innocence of another time period, a faded beauty, a sentimentality that may or may not have been in the studio when the image first passed through the camera's lens. Because nude photographs of females are so much more plentiful than those of males, each requires its own examination and description.
